What is a Euphonium?

A very good question for those who are...well...less educated in the feild of music.   Nevertheless, I will enlighten and amaze you all with my stunning description.   After countless nights of stressful research (yeah..sure) I have solved this question that has awed and amazed the music world.  So...what is a Euphonium?

Maybe you know it better as:

A Baritone

A "mini" tuba

A "tenor" tuba

A "valve" trombone

That thing the kid in the third row plays

While all of these are "techinally" correct, a Euphonium is much "specialer" than all the above!!

Microsoft Musical Instruments says, "A Euphonium looks like a small tuba, in fact it is also called a tenor tuba.   As this name suggests, it is a middle voice, or tenor, brass instrument which plays an important part in brass and military bands.  Its flaring concial bore gives the euphonium a velvety sound, making it a favorite for solos.  The Euphonium may have four or even five valves.  Extra valves give it a greater range."

So, what is the difference between a Euphonium!! and a baritone?

Many think that the difference is that a bartione has a curved bell and three valves, and a Euphonium has a straight bell and 4 or 5 valves.  However...THIS IS NOT TRUE!!   "The actual difference is easy to see, if you know what to look for. The euphonium will normally have a much larger bell, bore size, and overall size."

Here is a good chart I found one the WWW.

Source Baritone Euphonium
The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians narrow bore (accurate photo) wide bore; warm, large tone; deep-cup mouthpiece; tenor of tuba family
International Cyclopedia of Music and Musicians smaller bore & tone; semi-conical cup mouthpiece; 3 valves larger bore & tone; semi-conical bore; deep-cup mouthpiece; 3 to 5 valves
New Harvard Dictionary of Music smaller bore; tapered like a cornet larger bore; tapered like a flugelhorn
New Oxford Companion to Music narrower bore wider bore; called baritone in USA

Here are a couple of fancy illustrations for ya to look at.  Using all the info above, you can decided what they are.
